ScaleOut application and VMware

In most cases we advise customers to avoid vMotion — if vMotion causes a ScaleOut host to go offline for an extended periods then other hosts will assume that it failed. The ensuing recovery protocols can affect store throughput.

We’ve improved resilience since 2013 and added a number of heuristics to better protect against this kind of event, but if the vMotion operation takes too long then it will still cause problems. The size of VM, amount of allocated memory, the overall load at time of vMotion are important factors to consider. We do have a number of customers who regularly perform vMotions and have no problems — it really depends on your confidence in your environment to be able to perform the vMotion quickly, given the size of the VM — you’ll definitely want to run some tests if you choose to pursue this. But as a matter of policy, we continue to recommend that vMotion is avoided if you want the best possible stability.

Hi Team,
Thanks and appreciate it !!

Yea, we are running some tests at the moment. In our environment, I can't even see a ping packet drop when we do vmotion. We have multi-nic vmotion which gives us more bandwidth. So it's all good there and of course there is a small network delay at the end of vmotion that we all knows, butin milliseconds. Even with we observed host failures.

Just wondering if there are any application settings, similar to time out setting in Windows cluster, to fine-tune the delay for detecting host failure.

Thanks and Regards

By default, ScaleOut StateService (SOSS) relies on internal heuristics when it comes to handling communication delays and network interruptions. You can disable it by setting the auto_npf configuration parameter in the soss_params.txt file to 0. That would allow you to manually lower SOSS’s sensitivity to transient network interruptions instead of relying on SOSS’s automatic mechanism. You can do that by setting a lower value for the net_perf_factor configuration parameter (by default, it is set to 100). Please read more about these parameters in our documentation here:
